Our Story

One cool, Spring day in the shadow of Mt. Konocti, a family came to lay out their vineyard using straws to mark where the vines would be planted. While feasting during their midday lunch they saw a murder of crows dancing around the straws, which made them laugh. Yet, when they looked again, the crows and the straws were gone.

The family learned two things that day: be wary of dancing crows, and what to name their vineyard.

Spring 2020

Growing season

Spring of 2020 was mild and the rains were adequate but not plentiful. Set proceeded in a rapid fashion due to a warm and clear May without interruption from either frost or rains. Summer ripened smaller than average berries into the ideal size for producing a wine of considerable concentration. “Cooler than typical” August and September days provided a lengthy hang time to resolve tannins and ripen the skins and seeds to perfection. The daily arrival of the winds coming. lifted the heat from the ground and restored the vines to equilibrium as they slumbered each night. This recovery is essential to producing a wine with the natural acidity and delicate flavors that fill each glass.
We harvested on Friday, October 2 with the grapes showing an optimum balance of sugar and acidity. Coupled with the 100+ year vine age of this rare field blend, the 2020 vintage promises complexity and balance until 2032

With a color dancing between red and deep purple, this opulent and vibrant glass of wine gives off aromas of wild iris, sandalwood and blueberry pie. The palate is enlivened by a steady, generous flow of brambly huckleberry and bright blackberry flavors. The mid-palate is accented by a refreshing acidity that pleasantly escorts you to subtle spice notes of wild thyme, white pepper and lavender on the way to a lengthy and lingering smooth mocha finish.
